The Haus der Musik is a must-see for anyone with an interest in music, especially classical. Plan to spend at least two or three hours in the museum to fully enjoy its offerings. To start, you'll learn learn all about the Vienna Philharmonic including its history and you can view a performance in the theatre. The second part of the museum is dedicated to the human auditory system and sound. As boring as that sounds, the hands-on exhibits make it a fun excursion and learning experience. The third part of the museum is where you can learn about the Viennese composers. The pre-recorded audio tour provides in-depth information about composers such as Hayden, Mozart, Beethoven, the Strausses and Mahler, among others. Authentic original scores and personal belongings of the composers adds to the enjoyment.
The highlight of the third section is the virtual composer feature. This feature allows each user to learn about symphony conductors and how to conduct an orchestra. Following the tutorial, you have the opportunity to select a piece of music from one of the Viennese composers and conduct the Vienna Philharmonic using a special electronic baton. If you aren't on tempo or don't use the correct baton moves, the orchestra members will shout their disapproval and some will walk out. If you make it through the piece with orchestra members still in place, you will receive the admiration of the virtual audience.
The final section of the Haus der Musik is Futuresphere, a blending of sound and visuals. The Brain Opera allows visitors to create music using movement, touch, and voice. It is difficult to explain, but quite fun to experience. I found it as enjoyable to create the music as it was to watch school children's amazement at the exhibit.
